Bowie Knives and big blades

"For here is an instrument adapted to knife-fighting as an art. Unfortunately, literature has in the past erroneously represented the knife-fighter as casual, blood-thirsty, drawing his weapon in the darkness of night against his unsuspecting victim - with an amateur's overhand stroke. Whereas in truth, in the era of the Bowie Knife, men who desired to master their weapon went to school... The matter was serious; the Knifeman must study to merit his knife."

~from Bowie Knife, by Raymond W. Thorp

Throughout time all warrior cultures have understood the value of the short sword. In the land of the ancient Greeks it was the bronze kopis that was found in the hand of the Spartan King Leonidas as he and the three hundred defended the gates at Thermopolis. During the reign of the Roman Empire the legionnaire’s weapon of choice was the iron gladius. In the ninteenth century of the American Southeast and West the short sword took the form of the Bowie Knife. Six to twelve inches of cold, hard, sharpened steel became the final word when chambers were empty or when powder was wet. By the end of the 1800s schools had sprung up from New Orleans to the Carolinas teaching the use of the big blade for self defense and the settling of affairs when words would no longer suffice.

To the twenty first century American the study of the Bowie knife is not necessarily about self defense, although it has proven itself more than capable in that regard; instead it is about connecting with our American martial heritage as well as gaining a deeper understanding of the movement of the human body in relation to the geometry of all Martial arts, Eastern and Western.

Now is your chance to become a part of this unique martial tradition. M.A.C.K. has developed a comprehensive curriculum that will teach you to use this most iconic of American blades. Through M.A.C.K.’s Bowie and big blades program you will learn why, next to his six gun, when the chips were down, a man’s best friend was his Bowie.
